The Sion is an innovative electric car with integrated solar cells in the body, seating for 5, a range of 250km and a price of less than 16,000 Euros, excluding battery. The roof, hood, trunk, and sides of the car consist of highly efficient mono-crystalline silicon cells covered by a layer of polycarbonate, which are sufficient to provide 30 kilometers per day of free driving through electricity generated by the sun. For longer distances, the vehicle utilizes a battery that can be either leased or purchased. Two models are planned - the Model I Extender with a 30kWh battery system and 250 km range, and the Model II Urban with a 14.4 kWh battery system and 120 km range.
Sono Motor Company was founded in 2016 by three friends from Munich, Germany who developed a car in their garage to demonstrate how solar energy could be used to make transportation independent from oil. They used a successful crowd funding campaign to raise the funds needed to design and build a prototype vehicle, which was released to the public in July 2017. The Sion is currently under development with first deliveries planned for 2019.
