Why is carbon dioxide such an important environmental issue?
Topic updated: 2015-09-01

Carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere have been identified as the leading cause of global warming and climate change. The biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions are power plants which burn coal. Carbon dioxide emissions from power plants have dropped approximately 10% in the United States since 2010 as coal plants have been retired and replaced by natural gas fired plants. Over the next 25 years optimistic projections are that CO2 emissions could drop as much as an additional 15% as coal plants continue to be replaced.
