How much energy will we need in the future?
Topic updated: 2015-09-01

It is predicted that world energy demand will increase by over 50% over the next 30 years, mostly driven by the expanding economies of developing countries. The contribution of renewable energy sources will continue to rise; however, fossil fuels are still expected to make up 80% of energy sources in 2040. Without significant technological breakthroughs in renewable energy production, coal will likely be the fuel of necessity to make up the gap between oil and gas production and demand.
