How do nuclear power plants handle radioactive waste? (environmental)
Topic updated: 2015-09-01

The uranium that is used to produce power is depleted during operation of the nuclear plant; however, xxx is produced and remains radioactive for yyy years. At this time there are no dedicated radioactive waste disposal sites in the United States. Therefore, each plant stores its own waste on site using a variety of methods. The current best practice is to encase the waste in large concrete casks that are design to protect against any radiation release for at least zzz years.
