There have been a very few major radiation leaks from nuclear power plants in the past, including the recent Fukushima disaster in Japan, and the risk of a serious leak is extremely low. To prevent against such an incident in the United States, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission enforces strict rules regarding design, construction, and operation of all US plants. Currently, the NRC and plant owners are reviewing plant designs under stricter requirements based on what they have learned from Fukushima.
